Although we are officially out of recession, times are still tough for many businesses and public sector workers. With the announcement of massive cuts in the public sector to reduce the budget deficit, it seems inevitable that redundancies are going to be a recurring phenomenon in the immediate future.
It can be difficult to know what to do to soften the blow. Redundancies come in many shapes and sizes, so what is suitable for some certainly won’t be suitable for everyone. It may be appropriate to give a redundancy gift in some situations. Where redundancies are voluntary, for example, giving a farewell gift may be appropriate because chances are the employee will not be too nervous about leaving their job.
For managers who are close to a team that tends to be redundant, it may also be appropriate to give gifts as a memento of the time they worked together. In this case it is the gift of friendship, which can help soften the impact.
Where overabundance is likely to lead to bitterness and resentment, the gift is often not appropriate as it may make matters worse. Being redundant is an upsetting time for everyone involved, so any decision about receiving a gift should be carefully considered.
If you decide to go ahead and receive gifts from people, there are some pointers that are advisable to follow so as to avoid an adverse reaction.
You obviously don’t want to get something that looks cheap, but also be careful that your gift doesn’t look too fancy. Being told you’re losing your job to help the company survive will only be given a lavish gift, pissing people off, and in circumstances they’d probably prefer cash.
Consider personalizing the gift. This shows that some thought has gone into it and the company hasn’t brainstormed the same thing for everyone. Think about getting engraved with a name or message, or even a company logo if it’s not going to be too annoying.
Choose your time carefully. It’s probably not the best time to give a gift right after you’ve told someone bad news. If redundancies are being announced on the day or week before employees’ vacation, giving them gifts on their last day would be a good sign.
